God who is ABLE

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians‬ ‭3:20-21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

As we continue to study the promises of God, the Lord wants us to remember that He is the God who is able. Able to do what exactly – anything!

He has supernatural abilities.

The word supernatural according to Merriam Webster means: departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature.

Ability from the same source means the quality or state of being able. It also means competence in doing something.

When the supernatural power (ability) of Yahweh comes upon us and gets in us, we can do or get what neither money nor strength can achieve.

Let’s sit and let that marinate in us for a bit.

The Vine

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

My mom loves gardening. She’s not the best gardener but she has a love for seeing not only plants bloom but also seeing crops come forth. As soon as spring burst forth this year, she went around the back of our home and with my dad, they begun their tilling of the soil. I want to interject here and say that throughout the winter, she was constantly throwing food peelings around the back. Why? To add some nourishment to the soil. I’m no farmer so I can’t break down the effects but seeing this causes me to think of how Farmer Jehovah adds to our varying soils different peelings in the winter because He has a plan and purpose in mind during the spring and summer.

So, after the soil was tilled, the seeds were planted and over time I began to see various crops coming forth. There were squashes of different kinds, potatoes, hot peppers, okras, tomatoes, peaches, corns and even some strawberries.

As I looked on I began noticing that the squashes had a tendency to find plants (see photo above with the corn) and even fences that they would wrap their tendrils around. In the most unlikely of places I would see these tendrils gripping and climbing higher. I noticed that the tendrils were even finding their way to our neighbors’ yards. It was remarkable to see.

On one such observation, I saw where a squash began growing on a fence (more like a section of wires) my parents erected to keep the deer out. The tendrils, I noticed entered different openings of the fence as a way to hold on, possibly for stability and even for support. In and out of the holes of the fences the tendrils went until it decided to begin bearing fruit (vegetable in this case). As the squash formed initially, it originally sat a groove of the fence. I noticed however, that as it grew bigger and bigger, it was raised from the fence by the tendrils holding it and began hanging in the air. Seeing this sight really astounded me and so I asked both parents if we should harvest this squash in order to prevent it from falling to the ground via gravity and bursting open. Both parents emphatically responded with a “NO.” What they said next though got me. They said “the squash would be fine because the vine was strong enough to hold it. Wow!

Lessons

Holy Spirit immediately began forming teaching lessons in my head.

1. Jesus is the vine. If we stay connected to Him, He can keep us hanging, even in mid-air.
2. Jesus is the vine. We can trust that being connected to Him will keep us safe (His definition of safe mind you, not ours).
3. Jesus is the vine. By remaining connected to Him, we can be confident gravity (trials of life) can never pull us down, beyond His reach.
4. Jesus is the vine. Life can only continue once we stay connected to Him.
5. Jesus is the vine. He decides when we are ripe for harvest and when we are ready to be eaten.
6. Jesus is the vine. We are not and so have no control over our growth, where we go, who partakes of us – He does!
7. Jesus is the vine. He is able to go through any place (see picture above) and as the fruit/branch connected to Him, we will be beneficiaries. Where Jesus is, we benefit.
8. Jesus is the vine. We don’t need to worry about being strong enough or safe enough. He’s got us.
9. Jesus is the vine. He has supernatural abilities to do what we can’t, to exceed our expectations, to defy the laws of nature.

Wrap-Up

As we began this study, we began by saying some promises are contingent on our obedience while others are just given to us based on our acceptance of the promises. I believe that seeing God’s supernatural workings in our life can fall into both categories. You see, sinners see God at work but because their eyes are blinded, they describe it as chance, or coincidence or even luck.

Those of us who are in relationship with Him get to see and partake first hand in what He is doing. We get to see how He rewards our obedience to Him when we stay connected to His vine. Those around observing (as I am still to that squash hanging on to that vine) get to experience God’s supernatural ability to defy gravity. His power showing that He can do more than I can imagine.

As people who cling to the Vine, we get to see how God provides for us supernaturally – against the odds.

Unemployed spouse, parent or even self and we see God providing miraculously.

Bills stacking high, we see Him touching the hearts of the companies in extending to us longer grace periods to come up with the funds.

Sick parents,we see His outstretched hands of compassion on them, and us. We see our employers showing us favor to be away from work to nurture those in our care.

No food, we see Him providing a food bank or a church to donate so much so that we have more than enough to give to our neighbors.

Whatever the issues or obstacles we face or come up against, our God is able to do abundantly more than we could ask, think or imagine. So long as we remain in the vine, He’s able to hold unto us even in midair.
