“Throw your burden upon the Lord, and He will sustain you. He will never allow the godly to be upended.” Psalm 55:22, NLT
Jesus in His ministry on earth forewarned us that in this life we would have problems; in fact, the word He used was tribulations or as some translations report trouble (John 16:33). The Greek word from this verse is thlip’-sis which means: pressure, affliction, burden, anguish or even persecution. Job 14:1 states that “A man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble” (emphasis added). Here is this word again –trouble! What!?! But. It. Is. There. Or should I say here, smacked dabbed middle in our lives. We can’t rid it, can’t shake it, can’t escape it or bury it. Good thing for us, the remedy or prescription in handling this is also found in the Scriptures.
Psalm 55:22 states that we need to “throw our burdens upon the Lord” which means that we aren’t expected to walk around with it. Have you ever witnessed someone throwing a ball? They hold it so firmly and with all the strength they can muster they release that ball to its intended destination. Better yet, have you ever walked around with your kitchen garbage in your hands for days, months even? Do you not take the garbage outside and if possible, throw it into the trash bin as quickly as possible in order to rid yourself of it? This is how I believe we are to cast our pressures or burdens to God. We should release it from our grip as quickly as possible and with a good aim ensure that this lands right in the middle of Savior’s hands.
Prayer: Father, forgive us for all the times we have refused to throw our cares into Your capable hands. We confess we are stubborn at times and ask that You would break our wills. Transform our minds by the renewing of Your Word and teach us to put all our trust in You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
