This is a phase

As the mom of a teenager, there were many a days I wanted to tear my hair out, to throw in the towel, to leave the country, planet and never return.

I’ve had instances where I would wonder how long I would have to deal with this boy child of mine who was struggling to find himself.

Earlier today, the town I lived in experienced a sudden thunderstorm. The sun in an instant had disappeared; the winds began howling; trees began making obeisance to the earth. It felt as though all the water was being released from the heavens in an attempt to cause a flash flood. Even the lights in my home began flickering on and off. The entire place felt eerie.

When the storm ceased, I went outside to see if any damage had occurred and happened to meet upon the neighbor who lived on the right side of my house, Dean.

We both stood looking across the street and saw where my neighbor’s tree had lost many of its limbs. Apparently the wind had caused the tree in front of Donna’s home to decide today was the day to get rid of unnecessary baggage.🤪

Usually, Donna is home with her car parked in her driveway. Thankfully today, she was away and so her car was spared damage. If you look a bit closer at the pictures, you will see where the limbs fell just a few feet shy of her home. Any closer and she would have been dealing with structural damage.

The Lord spared her life, her car and her home.

Dean and I discussed what transpired on Donna’s property, and how thankful we were that further damage did not occur.

He went into immediate action mode. He made plans to get his chainsaw so that he could remove the debris before Donna returned home. He shared that she was a single mom whose son was away at Georgia Tech and so she would have no help to remove the fallen limbs and branches.

Talk about neighborly love. (I interject here to say that my neighbor who had the mishap is a single, African American woman. Dean is a Caucasian male, and also happens to be a police officer. Racism exists, but not everywhere. While we despise the injustice and the hatred caused by sin, let us celebrate the love and compassion we see exemplified by others).

Upon returning inside my home to head back to work, I began sharing with my mom the conversation I had with Dean. My son walked in the room, overheard our conversation and said nothing.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness…Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” James 1: 2-3, 12

At the end of my work shift, as I made my way past the front door heading towards the kitchen, (my home office is in the basement), I saw my son’s bed slippers positioned at the front door. Immediately my mind went into questioning mode. Where was Zach? Why was he outside during “corona time?” And more specifically, why had he left the house without a word?

I noticed the front door was unlocked and so opened the door to see if he could be located. My eyes immediately found themselves looking across the road and lo and behold, there was my son helping Dean remove the fallen limbs.

To say I was shocked, was an understatement.

I felt a surge of delight and pride flooding the very cores of my soul.

I found myself praising Abba for the gift of His child who took the initiative to leave the comforts of his room in order to go outside and help someone else.

The Lord reminded me of something my adopted mom shared with me during the early teenage years of Zach when he would drive me constantly up the wall.

“Dee, this is a phase.”

Time after time she would assure me that Zach was going through a phase and he would come out of it a responsible and mature man. Today, I saw a glimpse of this.

As parents, we never know what our children will be once they have left the childhood and teenage phase. We seldom get glimpses of their character development until years down the road. Many times, we feel to throw in the towel and walk away. Countless times, we may want to give in and to certainly give up.

Hang in there.

Like the storm that came, caused mayhem and left evidence of its presence; it eventually left.

Storms do not last forever, and neither does trouble, pain, problems, suffering etc – they are just phases.

“…Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalms 30:5

Donna was able to park in her driveway and not worry about any debris.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

Can you recall a torrential season in your life where you stuck through it, survived and today can celebrate the fact that you endured?

PS: The sun did return after being hidden behind the clouds. In fact, the sun had never left, the clouds just obstructed its view 🤗

  1. I just love this. How God protected her home, car and what a wonderful neighbour Dean who helped out. I was reminded of our neighbour and a very dear friend, a Caucasian man who is a detective, who is absolutely wonderful.

Reading about your son helping out made me feel proud, as a mum to a 15yr old , I know the pain to get them to do anything out of their own accord is a massive task.
    Blessings Dee 😊💙

3.5 teens??? You’re a trooper for sure. May the Lord continue to grant you strength, endurance, patience, joy and resilience lol. Our babies are gifts and inheritances from Abba, though many times, the packages look crumpled 🤣😂

      1. We are recovering at different speeds depending on how much damaged we had. Some people were so damaged it breaks my heart. I drive by their homes on the way shopping and sigh. Thankfully, the Lord hears our groaning. Thanks for asking. 😊

  4. This got me so teary. Especially the relief you must have felt when you saw your son helping out. We can definitely become hyper focused on those negatives and miss the abundance of positives still around us. For too long I have believed that I am stuck. Today, I feel as if I may be starting to get the whole resting thing, and the belief that storms do pass is rising. Thanks so much for sharing. I needed this confirmation and the good tears. ❤

    1. Oh my scribbler, let me offer you a huuuuge hug 🤗🤗🤗

It can be easy to miss the abundance of positivity around us. I think it’s a tactic of the enemy to get us to take our eyes off the things that are good, noble, honest etc. He loves when we forget to count our blessings and lose sight of ABBA’s grace in our lives. There is a old proverb I grew up hearing, “every long prayer has an amen.”

I’m thankful the Lord is able to comforting you through His peace and has reminded you that even the worst storms have an expiration date.

You and Andrew will remain faithfully in my prayers ❤️❤️

  5. I loved this post. I believe there is no race besides the human race, which has good people and not so good people all in various shades. Thanks for shining the light on some good out there. God bless you, your son and your neighbors. I especially liked this phrase ” the sun had never left, the clouds just obstructed its view” Love in Christ sister, ❤ Donna 🙂

    1. Hello my sister Donna, thanks for stopping by today. Yes oh yes, I agree with you 100 percent. The only race is the human race and the only race worth running, is the one with Christ 😉

It’s amazing isn’t it, the sun never left. Even when night falls and it feels like it’s darker than usual, the sun still remains in the sky. The change is the earth rotating – the sun continues to hold its position, just like our Lord who remains immovable and always abounding.

May the Lord bless and keep you my sister. May He make His face to shine upon you. May He lift His countenance upon you and be gracious unto you. And may He wrap you in His Shalom 🙏🏽❤️

  6. “Can you recall a torrential season in your life where you stuck through it, survived and today can celebrate the fact that you endured?” Heh heh. Yep 🙂

All kidding aside as a parent to two lovely grown daughters I can fully empathize and understand your position. As our kids grow into the people God intends them to be we never know what path they will take. There is mystery, surprise and anguish but if we release them to the Father we can be at peace letting them grow into their own. Like you, I wondered at times about my own daughters but they have turned into beautiful young women. You have an amazing son with a lovely mother so I am sure Zach is going to be an amazing man.

On a side note I have discovered late in life that we can never truly know our children for the relationship we have with them causes them to behave differently around us than with others. I just watched 2 7 year old twin girls and saw this in action again. They were one way with us and very different with their mom. I think familiarity has a lot to do with this. So this got me to thinking and now I realize that if I really want to know who my daughters are I have to talk with people they encounter. I have learned incredible things this way and have been immensely humbled.

So when God talks to others we have had encounters with will they testify that we are indeed sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father or will they see us as sons and daughters of another father? Interesting question.

    1. Homer and Wanda, you’ve been faithfully in my prayers 🤗, but judging from my silence, you would never even know…😞

You’re spot on, our children do behave differently in front of others vs us. When Zach was younger I often felt the teachers spoke of another child – not my own.

I’m thankful that you’ve reminded me today that our children must be entrusted to our Lord – in every single area. Hallelujah for the transformation of your caterpillars into beautiful butterflies too 🙌🏽

As for your question, it is quite sobering and worth us locking it in our hearts. May we live in such a way that duplicity is never named among us. May we reflect our Father not just when we stand in His mirror or walk in His shadow, but always, especially in front of those whose hearts are parched, for the love of Christ.

ABBA’s blessings to you always ❤️🙏🏽

  12. True, True, True!
Just as we have the four seasons of summer, winter, fall, and spring, we (and our children) also go through phases. Recognizing those phases is critical else we struggle with what God is doing.
Also, storms don’t last, strong people do. Strong people are not strong of and in themselves, but for God who made them so. Certainly, good still abound. The little foxes that spoil the vines, make everyone be grouped as bad because of the bad decision of one person.
I also want to agree that the hand of God moved the tree to fall at the time and where it did (my paraphrase).
Thanks for sharing. Thanks also for liking my comment on Mrs. T’s Corner, A Beautiful Necessary Distraction.

I’m in full agreement that it behooves us to recognize the phases we enter so that we do not struggle with what the Lord is doing in our lives. So many times we see the fallen trees and focus on the mess it caused instead of zeroing in on how the Lord has removed what obstructed our views. ☺️

      Blessings to you always 🙏🏽
