God of lamentors

“The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!” Psalms‬ ‭22:26‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Once again, another financial institution has lowered my credit limit due to the missed mortgage payment from back in September. That indiscretion if you may, caused my credit score to drop by nearly 60 points.

As I dialogued with my special friend, the email came in and boy did this news hit deep within my core.

“Not again,” I said out loud. Lord, when will this season end. When will we be able to bounce back from these storms that have been blowing our way. Whew! Sometimes it seems as though every week there is a new challenge. Last week I remember telling a girlfriend that I felt as though I was walking on a thin string. Then Thursday happened. The Lord gave me back my bearings and then….today’s email.

The Hurst family at 443 Parkview have been really hit with a series of challenges that have set us back financially….BIG TIME. I’ve never been in this stage in my life…EVER.

As I shared how I was feeling my friend listened. He allowed me to pour out my frustration and never once interjected to “pacify” how I felt. As I released the turmoil I felt, the Lord used His silence to remind me of what He has been teaching me of lamenting (expressing regret or disappointment over something considered unsatisfactory, unreasonable, or unfair) over the past few days.

Here goes:

  1. When someone is lamenting/venting, let them
  2. Do not attempt to pour into them when they are releasing what is frustrating them
  3. Listen, patiently and listen well
  4. Pouring into someone who is still lamenting will not allow the point to be received well, at all.
  5. In fact, two things happens when we attempt the above: what we are pouring in ends up being poured back out and thus no positive effect takes place AND, what they are trying to get rid of ends up being swallowed back because there was no passageway to have it released.
  6. Allowing an individual a safe place to lament allows them to empty their pitcher so that we can see the full picture.
  7. Allowing an individual the opportunity to lament empties their pitcher so that through God, we may pour back into that space that has now been made open.

I like to think of ABBA doing the same thing when we come to Him in times of frustration. After we have poured out our hearts to Him something shifts. The Holy Spirit carries away the frustration (many times the problems remain, just our perspective shifts), and replaces that space with His peace.

Abba listens, especially when we come to Him crying. “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” Psalms‬ ‭34:17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Think of the Psalms. Many times David went to ABBA and poured out his gripes, his angst and his annoyances and then….then we see a shift taking place. The tone changes and we see David using the words or phrases: Yet I will praise, Inspite of this I will say, But I will trust in You, Though this or that I chose to….

The Lord welcomes our laments to Him. In fact, I’d like to think that He takes delight when we crawl up on His lap and say, “Daddy, that bully did such and such to me.” Whew, what an imagery. The comfort doesn’t just end there though, unlike my special friend who was able to only listen empathetically, ABBA listens and many times, He does something to those bullies. All the time though, every single time, He listens and offers strength to our feeble hearts.

HALLELUJAH!!!

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord ‘s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.” Isaiah‬ ‭61:1-3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Until next time remember, His Promises are our Guarantee…🙌🏽

  1. Really Good Dee. To walk in His peace that transcends understanding is soul-enriching in a way that nothing else can be. And your list for letting others vent is a good reminder. Sometimes we just need someone to listen. Love you!

    1. His peace! Yes Lord, Your peace that transcends human understanding 🙌🏽
He had to remind me of listening when I felt like I wasn’t being heard and so His lesson was, “the way you felt unheard, never allow others to feel the same.”
Thank you for listening to me, Jacquie. I looovvee you!

  2. This is a wonderful post that will help others! And yet is another confirmation for me of what God is doing and saying to me personally. The scripture you posted was also shared in our Sunday morning service. Thanks for being used of God through your own struggles. I believe God is opening up a Door Of Hope for you my friend! Hang in there! Love ya! 💜

    1. Whew!
I needed that pronouncement sweet friend, I really really hope He comes through with that door of hope soon 🙏🏽
Through these challenges, I’m seeing where surrendering to Him comes with breaking and crushing and pressing but if it gives Him glory, I have to say like Jesus “nevertheless not my will but thy will be done.” 🙌🏽

      1. This reminded me of what a dear prayer warrior taught me in times past. To walk in a place called, “Whatever.” Can’t pay my bills—whatever Lord. Car is torn up…whatever Lord. It’s a place where we don’t let anything steal our peace, because we realize that whatever happens in our life is ordained of God. So when things happen, we act like…whatever… no worries…and she also said through this time, we praise and worship God like never before. When she would go to God in prayer, no matter what was happening, she praised, worshipped and danced before the Lord. After she got done with that, she prayed for situations and people. It really changed my way of thinking at the time. I do have moments when I forget to do this. I’m a worrier by birth, so it has been a process for me to let go and let God! Praying with you my friend for that door!

        1. Hmmmm… “whatever”…
This place comes through total surrender for sure. A place where we forget about the happenings to the point where our focus is on the One who can turn it all around yet we know it’s only if He choses…maaannn!! I’d love to daily live in that country ☺️ and you know what, it is very much quite possible to gain residence there. I’m booking a ticket at Cast Your Cares Counter and heading on out ♥️♥️

          1. Oh Dee…..Don’t know how this comment got misplaced! I’m just now seeing it!…Oh to be able to walk up to that ‘Cast your cares counter’ and totally leave my problems there…I’m still working on that! This post was so good, I had to go back and reread! I want you to know you have a friend in me-to just listen. This spoke to me! I know I don’t always get things right. Sometimes because I have went through so much myself, I want so very much to be a comfort to others. I know what it’s like to have no one who will listen or will make light of your situation, or feel like you are totally alone. Sometimes it’s just best to just listen. The Word tells us there’s a time to keep silent and a time to speak. I pray God gives us all the wisdom to know the difference. I love you my beautiful friend! I’m still praying with you! 🙏🏼🤗 Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Ah Ms. Deb, May I confess that sometimes it really doesn’t feel like I’m trusting. Whew! Sometimes I feel like I’m walking in a thread instead, but God. As we surrender our lives to Him, the molding certainly takes place however He sees fit. 🙌🏽

    1. Yes! Amen! Both are absolutely vital my sister. If we keep everything bottled in, it does us more harm than good. If we never listen, we are considered to be fools. Lord, help us to be balanced 🙏🏽

I love that line, “in God alone is our faith perfected.” Wow! He knows just how much heat to turn up and down. He knows all we need to make us into the Masterpiece He’s cultivating.

  4. Wonderful and honest post Dee. Pouring out so that we can be filled again is so very important. Because unless we pour out we are not open to allowing to be filled to be comforted or to heal.
And sometimes the best we can do is listen.

  6. This was a good lesson little sister that we need to be good listeners. There have been times when someone is talking and I start mentally forming my response instead of continuing to listen. The Lord is so amazing at listening to us. I’m glad your friend is a patient listener. Keep trusting and believing that God will work things out financially. ❤️

    1. Mmmhmmm, I’m so thankful Abba listens patiently, every single time too. What a Daddy! I’m thankful too that He’s sent someone to model that. I’m the opposite, I find that I’m ready to respond and even rebut when someone is talking because I’m thinking “I’ve a good point to make and I don’t want to forget” lol but the Lord is asking that we listen, especially if a person is really pouring their heart out. Thank you for praying and trusting with me ❤️❤️ We need a breakthrough!

  7. Thanks for this your wisdom on lamenting. I just realized that because I have a need to help people I can definitely want to “fix” things. I can’t stand to see people hurting. There are definitely times when you don’t have any words, and I guess that’s okay.

For me it’s the hardest when the people closest to me are down. My empathy kicks in and I may go into “fix it” mode a little. I guess that’s something I need to think about.

There was a time when I was really struggling, and someone said something to me that made me think they were insinuating that I was complaining. I wasn’t, so thankfully a Pastor friend had already just told me that it was okay to lament. I focused on that instead. And to be honest, lamenting was a new lesson for me, so it’s definitely better to just stay silent sometimes when people are pouring out their hearts. Learning when to speak and when to stay silent is a lesson in itself, I suppose.

    1. Oh it is Tina, it’s a skill that Holy Spirit helps to cultivate in us. Some people are really really really good listeners, I’m in elementary class learning so I can get that degree 😆

Lamenting is something we seldom encourage, when it is so vital to our moving on. I’ve tried to share my feelings a time or two with different friends and instead of listening, they go into “it’s going to be okay mode” or “don’t look at it this way”…while those phrases have their places, when someone is hurting we just got to listen until…and segue into asking questions which renders comfort too.

One of the things I learnt in Stephens Ministry is that we are not healers, and certainly not cure givers…we are simply caregivers and that for me takes the weight off fixing it mode (which I still struggle with) and places the trust and onus on Jesus who is the only One who can “fix” any issue. Whew! Relief has come for us 🤗❤️

      1. Wow…some days I feel like I have SO much to learn. I’ve hit a season where I’m feeling as if I’ve been doing everything wrong. This is good! It’s an eye opener! But it’s also hard because it’s such an eye opener. I guess it’s one of those awkward humbling stages of growth. Lord, help us to love like you do! On our own we don’t know what we’re doing!

Surely we need You Jesus to help us to navigate life’s experiences and challenges. We need Your help to love, to listen and to effectively care. Remind us that we cannot do this life alone and it is through You only that we can overcome. 🙏🏽

  8. Precious One, I realize you to realize that it will take a minute to repair your credit score. This should be your number one challenge. Please keep your readers informed as to how you plan to go about this. It could help somebody else. Of course, we all depend on our Lord and Savior and that is how it must be. So please allow Him to give you the wisdom to survive this. It is because of your strength and tenacity, you are being challenged. Start the process of contacting the 3 credit companies for a review/correction. This credit situation has tentacles. Be encouraged my child. Much Love as usual from Mother Fowler.

Yes, this has been a season of trusting God with every facet of my life, especially where provision is concerned. I also believe He is trying to wean me from depending on the system of man where credit is concerned. I understand that in this country it tends to be required but I’m seeing where if one isn’t careful, it can be a lifeline and so for me, He’s really plucking all this away so that only He remains the Source.
Thank you for always sending me love notes…I appreciate you.

And love the part you stated that God causes us to have a mind shift where we no longer see the problem, instead we see His peace. Truly teaching us how to rest in the midst of the storms, knowing that the storms has no right to consume us!.
    Such Grace!. 💃

  12. Listening is a gift that’s more powerful than words.

Sometimes life deals us wounds that can’t be eased by heartfelt words.

Often all we need is a sympathetic ear.

    Great work!
