God of affliction

I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument (Isa. 41:15).

Since the last post until now, I’ve been dealing with a plethora of issues. I’ve found myself feeling overwhelmed at times, almost as if the Lord has me in a crucible where the heat underneath is so hot, the container I’m being held in might shatter at any given moment. I have been forced to take comfort in scripture that reminds me through countless examples, that every believer must be tested, and so I’m sure my life is no exception.

About two plus years ago, I sincerely prayed a dangerous prayer. I said, “Lord, I surrender my ALL to You. Search my heart and whatever is unlike You, take it all away, remove the dross I pray.”

Little did I know, the unfolding which was soon to take place. My mom lost her job, and for many months on end I didn’t know how the bills would be paid. I ended up losing what at the time was a very close friend; the grief that comes with this kind of loss cannot be described. To have someone walk away at the onset of a hard time, especially when you have always been there for them in their struggles- that kind of rejection, let’s just say the pain continues to be indescribable.

With the loss of income, the bills of our home began being heavily amassed. There was literally more bills than income. Mom had an unexpected hospitalization which led to not just another set back financially, but also very emotionally. I’ve also had to deal with a close relative (living in our home) who struggles with depression and cancer, and most recently she shared, suicidal thoughts. There were times, I found myself unable to sleep, I found myself longing for rest.

As the journey of the years unfolded, the Lord certainly was stripping me. I did not know initially, that the unfolding of the events in my life was in some way, many answers to my prayer of surrender.

The secret pride I carried knowing I could buy what I wanted when I could, the Lord began taking away.

The ability to pay my bills before the due date and even more than the minimum requirement, removed.

Grocery shopping my favorite activity, became difficult because now I could only buy what we needed.

I was now turning down attending functions I wanted to attend because I had to factor in gas money and travel expenses.

The Lord began really taking away all I leaned on heavily, the “crutch” of friendship, the “walker” of finances, the “wheels” of flexibility, the dependence on my “sources.” There were days early on where I felt somewhat like Job, all I held dear and near were being plucked from my hands.

I confess, letting go was not easy. Losing what I considered a life of comfort and luxury was difficult to say the least. Affliction became a very real thing for me. A dear friend of mine described my ordeal, as being put on four flat tires. I was unable to move until He gave me air.

Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever felt like your cross was way too much to bear? Have you ever felt like the pain was too much and there was no end in sight? Have you ever considered that going home to Jesus was the best option?

I know I have.

As I dealt with the various afflictions, the Lord allowed, (for I do believe that Yahweh is Sovereign, and nothing happens to any of His children without His permission or His knowledge), I realized how good it was for me to be afflicted. Suffering had and continues to have a purpose.

Through the various adversities I experienced Yahweh Jireh, a provider; Yahweh Rapha, a healer; Immanuel, God with me; and so many other attributes of God. I also discovered where I lived quite self-sufficiently where as a daughter of the King, I needed to be completely dependent on God.

I also discovered that when Abba is all I had, He was all I needed.

But, it did not end there, He also sent a core group of friends to walk alongside me (you all know yourselves and I thank you); He taught me the importance of being vulnerable; He provided me a community of people (this platform) for which to not only share my struggles but also to receive and pour into hope as well. Lastly, He blessed me with a man who has not only opted to walk alongside me as a friend, but who has committed to very soon, walk alongside me as a life partner.

Even in the midst of adversity, the Lord is there and does bless in some way shape or form. It’s about intentionally keeping our eyes on Him, and what He’s bringing forth in our lives. It’s about not being fixated on the problems, but remembering the problem solver and the diverse blessings that come our way.

So, even as I still go through trials and am still recovering from various setbacks, I take hope knowing that the God of my adversity is not done with me, and I can confidently say, He’s not with you either. Surely, though weeping has endured for a night (many nights even), joy will come in the morning. There is absolutely nothing that can separate us from His love and lastly, His love never fails.

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” Psalms‬ ‭34:19‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Until next time remember, His Promises are our Guarantee…🙌🏽

  1. Incredibly beautiful ❤️. I must admit I’m not yet brave enough for that prayer. Make me more like Thee? Yes. Take away all of my ungodliness? I don’t know if I’m strong enough for all of the trials that would involve…

    1. Ah my beloved, I will never say it was easy to utter that prayer, I struggled for days, maybe weeks before I could sincerely pray it…but, “…Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.” Romans’ 8:18, NLT

  2. “Precious One” is an apt name for you, as you describe what you are going through for now. The Lord is jealous for the attention and closeness of His precious ones. “He leadeth me, He leadeth me. By His own hand He leadeth me.” My experiences with Him are a witness to yours now. Please believe me when I say it is very, very worth it when you get to the place where you can catch your breath and see how the close relationship He has worked in you has changed you, and given to you a gift of the closeness to Him you couldn’t have done on your own. You are, indeed, a Precious One!

  4. Beloved Sis. I too had this same experience in my life where He was pulling everyone and everything I found comfort in away. I am now on the other side of it and your writing made me look back and see what He has done in my life since then. I count it all joy. I’m grateful for what He has done in your life and celebrate with you. Praise God for His goodness!

    1. Hallelujah! Blessed be the name of the Lord! I’m so glad to see a sister who’s made it to the other side and is rejoicing. Whew…it’s one thing to still await the “other side” but another to see a believer on the other side. Thank you for sharing sis ❤️🤗❤️

  5. That prayer was a very good one. The Bible said there is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth him understanding. You were somehow inspired to pray that prayer. You have wrote about your self-sufficiency- You were able to pay bills and do many stuff at will and you came to realized that God want you to depend on him and that is true. When or steps are to be ordered by God then our natural steps that is operating according to our own feelings have to be eliminated so we can walk in the spirit. The pain of it is the transition, because you did not understand what was happening but once you begin to understand the you start to have peace.
The whole thing right now is for you to sit back in you peace, faith and confidence in the Living God and watch how He is ordering your steps.
I have been through so much and see God at work. Even now I am going through one of the worst experience and God give me peace and I am just watching God doing His thing. The things is that we can do anything. The Bible says it is not in man to direct his steps.
What we are dealing with is reality and practicality of life and the decisions we make can mess up our walk with God and our true destiny. All we got to do is hand over our problems to Jesus Christ and watch him work.

    1. Mmmmaaannn!! You’ve hit on so many wonderful points! I completely agree that the Lord is who gives us understanding, I am grateful that through the pain and suffering, this a glimpse into why He’s done what He’s done. I also love what you said about how He orders our steps so that we can quit operating by our own feelings, and walk in His spirit. 🙏🏽

      1. So true. You have so many key points in your writing. 1 You were forced to take comfort in the scriptures. That is building up in the spirit by the word of God 2 All the sudden problem come to pull you to the source of strength 3 Recognizing secret pride 4 Through the trials, your experience of the many attribute of God came more practical
When you are a PRECIOUS ONE God allow you to go through stuff to build your character to set you up for greater things. After Job went through his trials, it wasn’t one problem he had but after the prolong problems and God turn the captivity of Job he was far blessed, more wealthier. Let us see what God will do in our lives

  6. Beautiful piece. It made me think of the moment Jesus came to me, it was in my darkest hour he approached me. I thank God for that time in my life. The life you once thought was good is nothing compared to the life you now have. He needed to strip you; He knew the plans He had for you. We thank God!

  7. Very encouraging little sis! The fact that you’re holding on to God’s hand through it all is an inspiration. Through adversity He’s there with us. The lessons we learn and the growth we have in Christ are invaluable. I see a beautiful blessing in the midst of the storm (your partner), and there are many more blessings to come. Praying for you my dear. ❤️

  8. Wow…I have absolutely nothing to say. You covered everything I would have said about trials and testing. That, atleast, is confirmation that everything Andrew and I have gone through is a standard practice for God. He may give and take away, but we always find out that He’s all we need. Yep, we struggle through it, but He does strengthen us. Hey, have you heard this song below. I totally love it. Man, it’s so true.

  9. I prayed the same prayer, when you ask God to show you, YOU He really will. I needed to face the truth about myself so I could be set free from it. Affliction doesn’t feel good but its necessary, in our affliction we learn the King’s decrees. It was in my affliction that showed me my pride, it was in my affliction that showed me my control issues.

I can relate to what you are going through, be encouraged woman of God! (Psalm 34:19).

    1. Yesssssss Kim! In the affliction we really get to see a reflection of who we are, and who He is. What a view! I love what you said about learning our King’s decrees…that is definitely a blessing that is worth receiving…worth more than gold 🙌🏽

  10. With all the “losses,” how fitting that you should be given something more precious than anything that was taken from you – the love of a man who has already walked beside you for better or worse. ❤ May God bless your marriage with His presence, as you dedicate your relationship and your lives to Him.

You are indeed an inspiration to me.
Your dependence on God and trust even in this difficult time is beautiful and I pray that you will grow in faith through this process. May you have that singular focus on Him instead of giving into fear or fatigue with the situation and may he strengthen you in your walk ahead. 💙

Btw, I did not miss the line where you have the promise of a new boo 😘😁.

  12. Dear Precious One, how very blessed and honored you are that the Father is answering your prayer in this way. I know many do not understand what you are patiently enduring but we do, and we stand with you. Your trials are for the perfection of your soul and are of great value. As the trials push you into ever greater dependence on your Beloved know that He will never leave you nor forsake you. We know those feelings will come but you must push past them and be anchored to the truth.

You are so very right that our Beloved is not finished with you. You have no idea where you are in the journey, nor are you supposed to, as the whole point is to disrupt all those systems not of God that you rely on for support. As God trains you to trust Him alone for your support and provision, you will come to understand completely what He is doing. Moving our trust from man to God takes a long time. We really have no idea just how much we trust man over God so cannot gauge properly what it take to get us to fully trust Jesus for our daily bread. You are in good hands Precious One.

Now just so you know once you start this journey of committing your all to Jesus, He is committed to getting you to the end. The only way you can stop the process know is if you choose to quit. Trust me on this, He will give you many, many opportunities to do so. This is how we are tested.

Each time we successfully pass a test and do not quit the next test will be harder. (Thankfully there is usually a time gap between tests so you can recover a bit and rest). God is looking for you to continually say yes to Him and not give up, no matter how hard it gets. And it will get harder, much harder, but never beyond your capacity within, and with Jesus, to endure. He will give you trials that will match your level of maturity and no more. As you succeed you will mature more and be strengthened.

Many people will feel, and express, pity for you Precious One, reject those. Pity only feeds ‘self’ and will only undermine your ability to endure. Stay in faith, knowing that all you are going through is for your growth in spiritual maturity and intimacy with your Beloved. Though you may not feel, see, or understand it now, these trials were chosen for you by the Father to build you faith and turn you into the Bride. The reward far outweighs the price you will pay. Though you may not see it now hang on in faith and be encouraged by stories like ours of people who have endured and have been rewarded.

We are honored to know you Precious One, even if only from a distance, and we stand with you in your journey of trial. If you ever need a supportive shoulder to encourage you when the trial gets very tough we will be here for you. It would be our great honor to bless you in your journey of faith.

    Blessings,

  15. Dee, thank you for once again sharing transparently what it is to walk with God through the fires of trials. He is faithful, and helps us with love, encouragement, and truth in myriad ways. The challenge is being able to focus enough to see His provision in the midst of loss and pain. From the bitter to the sweet: How wonderful that you’ve met someone with which to walk unified in Christ through this life. I rejoice in this with you, and will uphold God’s plan, purpose, and will for you both in prayer. Multiplied blessings ♥♥

    1. Ah dear, Bill, financial stresses are NO walk (or seat) in the park. We do get a front row seat of our Father’s hands, especially when He doesn’t show up on time (or at least on the deadline we have to meet). Thank you for your continued support and prayers. I faithfully pray for you and Mary 😊

  18. Lord we thank You for this message and the messenger. As I read this powerful message I was reminded of the words of prayer that I used to hear my late pastor utter of “Affliction School.” Little meaning did these words have to me then, but now I know wholeheartedly what he meant, and truthfully as I look back at all I’ve learned about God and seen of Him during these times, I can truly echo the sentiments of psalmist in Psalm 119…
